ENTHUSIASM………run for your lives!
Ah what a brilliant posting from Bethan, not a summary of the New Professionals Conference, but picking apart what she has taken away from conferences on the whole. And I like this, its enthusiasm as a choice. Now when I first read this, I thought Bethan meant that we can all also choose not to be enthusiastic, and my oh my there’s a lot of that in my library already! However I soon realised that what she means is this: That being enthusiastic is actually being Professional. And I like all things/pointers/suggestions Professional.
I was recently involved in a team brainstorming session around making our team a better place to be, and in my usual inimitable style, I suggested that colleagues may like to look up from their pc screen more often and……smile. This was met with utter displeasure! And yet we all know the effect a smile can have on us.
I have also recently acquired Susie Kay’s ‘Professionalism’ which is a ‘dip in’ type book and serves as good reminders for when your technique is waning. I particularly like this quote on page 35:
People will forget what you said
People will forget what you did
But people will never forget how you made them feel
You’re right – it is totally Susie’s view of professionalism! And she embodies it 🙂
I don’t think the slides from Eleni’s presentation are up online yet, but I’ll link you to them when they are. I think you’d appreciate them!
Oh brilliant, cheers Bethan 🙂
